Licence Key Already Bound to Another FQDN
- What happens when your 3CX V15 license key is already bound to another FQDN? The solution is simple and is outlined in this guide.
- Sep 10, 2014 - In this post we show you how to fix the 'License Key Already in Use' error when trying to re-activate a 3CX Phone System licence.
On this topic
You may encounter the warning in the powershell styled “PbxConfigTool” or during the web configuration guide.
At first it is important to understand how the hostname is composed within 3CX and that also owned FQDNs are not exempted from this. Here the full take on FQDN management and allocation.
A client running 3CX version 10 mentioned that no one was seeing voicemail indicators or getting voicemail notifications via email. I recalled that these are.
https://gymever581.weebly.com/blog/business-ethics-a-textbook-with-cases-7th-edition-pdf. Commonly this happens in the below cases:
- The selected FQDN hostname is very common (e.g. 3CX) and another 3CX user has already reserved this name for their own use.
- You have installed the PBX already once before while using a different hostname during first time v15 installation.
- You have installed the PBX with a demo “PBX Edition” key and bought a new commercial licence key.
- You have installed the PBX with key A and now attempt to install key B with the same FQDN.
Case A
In this case you must pick another name. Extend the hostname with something unique, like your company name (e.g. 3cx). You may try and pick the userpart of the FQDN in another domain.
Case B
You can still use the FQDN hostname you picked initially. However, if you are unhappy with the initial pick, you must release your key from your current binding. If 3CX is still up and running it will immediately lose the external FQDN (when it is a 3CX hosted FQDN) and Web Meeting capabilities until it is reinstalled.
Case C & D
You can use a new FQDN for the new key. If the initial FQDN should be maintained and mapped to the new key, the “evaluation” key must be released from the FQDN in order to map it to the new key. Also if a backup is in use to restore the 3CX configuration, this backup must not include the “licence key and FQDN” of the previous installation! This will allow entering a new key and FQDN during restore time.
Note: Once the FQDN is not bound to any key, the hostname returns back into the public pool of available FQDNs. In this moment it can be registered by any other user. Therefore it is advisable to do the switching in a timely manner to avoid disappointment!

3CX is priced as an annual licence/subscription which is based on the number of simultaneous calls required. As a rule of thumb, 1 sim. call per 3-4 extensions is sufficient, i.e. a company with 50 extensions would need a 16 sim. call licence. You can upgrade your subscription at any point in time by just paying the difference for the remaining period. If you prefer to buy a perpetual license and pay yearly maintenance, you can view pricing here.
Keygen
Standard licenses are free for the first year, regardless of size. After the first year, you can purchase your annual subscription for the prices indicated below.
